Building on its efforts to deliver exceptional patient care, the North Shore-LIJ Health System recently presented awards, bonuses and other rewards totaling about $230,000 to 19 employees who were recognized for providing extraordinary service to patients and families.
The health system’s first President’s Award was presented to Mary Cavaciuti of Bethpage, NY a nurse in the intensive care unit at LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park, who received a $10,000 check and tickets for a luxury cruise for two to a destination of her choice. Eighteen other employees who were nominated for the award by their individual hospitals, nursing homes and other North Shore-LIJ facilities each received a $5,000 check, dinner and two tickets to a Broadway show of their choice. All winners also received crystal plaques and were recognized at a celebratory dinner held at the Garden City Hotel.
“Our facilities are continually striving to improve the patient experience and the overall quality of care,” said Michael J. Dowling, the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s president and chief executive officer. “By honoring some of our individual employees with substantial prizes, the President’s Award program can help inspire others to take any and all possible steps to ensure total patient satisfaction.”
In accepting the award, Ms. Cavaciuti said, "A lot of organizations pay lip service to the values they have, but North Shore-LIJ is putting money where their mouth is." She was quick to share credit with her colleagues in LIJ’s Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit. "The sense of teamwork and camaraderie on that floor is like no other. They (her colleagues) have all helped me to excel.”
Ms. Cavaciuti was chosen by a selection committee made up of leaders from the North Shore-LIJ Health System and those representing businesses that strive for excellence, including: Cathy Nelkin Miller of the Garden City Hotel, Frank Costagna of Castagna Realty Co., and Jonathan Ward of Cross Country Staffing. Financial support for the President’s Award program was provided by North Shore-LIJ Health System trustee Donald Zucker.
