New York Registered Nurses to Form Environmental Task Force

Posted May 15, 2007

Since the time of Florence Nightingale, nurses have recognized the importance of a clean, safe environment for their patients. Recently, more nurses are becoming aware that the health of the general population is affected by toxins in the environment that cause asthma, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and auto-immune disorders.

The RN Healthy Environment Advocacy Task Force is being formed by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to ensure that nurses have a strong, united voice on these issues. This will be New York’s first environmental advocacy group of registered professional nurses.

All RNs are welcome to attend an information meeting on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, to learn more about environmental health and hear from experts who have experience in advocating on this issue.

The meeting is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the NYSNA conference center at 120 Wall Street (Floor 23), New York, N.Y. A light lunch will be served and 3.5 nursing continuing education contact hours will be awarded. The task force is funded through a grant from Health Care Without Harm.

There is no charge for the event, but RNs are requested to pre-register by calling
800-724-6976, ext. 277, or by logging in at www.nysna.org (“NYSNA Workshops”).
