Flushing Hospital Medical Center
Founded in 1884, Flushing Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) is Queens’ first hospital. The hospital today is a 293-bed not-for-profit teaching facility located in the prosperous and culturally diverse Flushing community. FHMC serves a community of over 1.9 million residents throughout Queens.
In 2003, Flushing Hospital was awarded accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. The hospital was one of the first to be judged under the new non-numerical grading system and performed extremely well.
Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry offers a wide array of mental health and addiction services to the community including a nineteen-bed Acute Care Inpatient Unit, a thirty-bed Chemical Dependency Unit, an Outpatient Mental Health clinic, the “Reflections Chemical Dependency” clinic and Asian and South Asian Behavioral clinics.
In August 1999, doctors at FHMC sounded the alarm about an outbreak of what would later become known as West Nile Encephalitis after diagnosing a cluster of patients with similar symptoms. Their detective work enabled city officials to launch a massive public awareness campaign and prevent further outbreak.
MediSys Health Network including Flushing, Jamaica, and Brookdale Hospital has been designated as one of only 4 centers of Bioterrorism Preparedness in New York City . This positions our network as a leader in this field. FHMC operates a full service, fully renovated and expanded Emergency Department that consists of separate adult and pediatric units, and is a 911 receiving station for EMS. In 2004, approximately 41,420 patients were treated in FHMC’s Emergency Department. Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s State Designated Stroke Center has been established to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment for patients who have suffered a “brain attack” from arrival at the hospital to discharge.
FHMC’s on-site Ambulatory Care Center has over forty general and specialty clinics including Internal and Pediatric Medicine, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, OB/GYN, Dentistry and Mental Health. By adding evening and weekend hours, Flushing Hospital was able to treat over 149,902 Ambulatory Care patients in 2004.
FHMC is home to Queens’ only patient Geriatric Medical Unit. This thirty-bed unit serves the many needs of the older adult community by providing its patients with highly qualified geriatric specialists.
In 2004, FHMC doctors performed approximately 2,141 deliveries. With the addition of eight new Labor Delivery & Recovery suites, Flushing Hospital has displayed its commitment to the community to provide the most positive birthing experience. Flushing Hospital has a well-established early intervention program and has an infant apnea program that is highly regarded.
FHMC has an extensive Community Outreach Department, providing free screenings to thousands of people each year. Flushing also operates a successful speaker’s bureau as well as a number of helpful and free support groups for the community.
