Cumberland Diagnostic & Treatment Center
Cumberland began as a community hospital and has provided quality care to the residents of Fort Greene and surrounding Brooklyn communities for more than 100 years.
We respond to local needs through many forms of community intervention, including a mobile medical van that provides cholesterol screening, hypertension assessments, vision tests, dental screening, nutritional counseling, HIV education and drug and alcohol treatment referrals. An annual back-to-school immunization campaign, two school-based health programs, a Geriatric Expo and our new Reach Out and Read Program, staffed by employee-volunteers who read to children and provide books at each immunization visit are just a few of the ways that we serve our various populations. Each June, more than 2,000 residents receive free health services at our Cumberland Health Fair.
Our Comprehensive Chemical Dependency Program, considered one of the best in New York State, serves about 200 patients daily. It employs innovative treatment techniques such as acupuncture, vocational education and instruction in parenting skills to help chemically dependent adolescents, mentally ill chemical abusers, veterans and women return to society as productive citizens. Cumberland also houses the Family Health and Support Program, which was initiated by the Mayor's office. This innovative program pools the resources of three City agencies, the Health and Hospitals Corporation, the Administration for Children's Services and the Department of Mental Health to improve access and treatment for families and children impacted by chemical dependency. The goals for program participants include sobriety, self-sufficiency and reunification of family.
We are also a participant with several managed care organizations. Cumberland D&TC offers a cutting-edge mammography unit, a Breast-Feeding Peer Counseling Program, Parenting Education Classes and a playroom for children whose parents are receiving care.
