Nassau Community College – State University of New York (SUNY)
In response to the community need for registered nurses, the Nursing Department at Nassau Community College was established and admitted its first class of students in 1962. The Nursing Department offers a curriculum, accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission leading to an Associate in Science Degree and eligibility for the National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). The percentage of our graduates who pass the NCLEX-RN examination consistently exceeds the state and national averages.
The Nursing Program is predicated on a balance among general education, nursing theory, and nursing practice. It draws from the biophysical and social sciences, mathematics, and the humanities. The faculty believes that an environment must be provided that assists students to acquire the cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies to function as a Registered Professional Nurse. The graduate of the Nassau Community College Nursing Program evidences the ability to function in
three roles as:
- Provider of care: the graduate of our Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program utilizes the nursing process to meet patient needs across the life cycle.
- Manager of care: the graduate of our ADN Program coordinates care for patients, collaborates with patients and other health team members, and appropriately delegates aspects of patient care.
- Member within the discipline: the ADN graduate of our program practices within the ethical and legal framework of nursing, and is accountable for nursing practice. The graduate of this ADN Program is committed to professional development and continuous learning.
The Nursing Program has articulation agreements with several local BSN programs which insures easy transfer
of credits. The Nursing Office, Classrooms, and four completely equipped nursing laboratories are located on
the second floor of the V Building. Faculty offices are located at various sites on campus. Clinical learning is provided in a variety of settings both on and off campus, such as:
